Kisii GBV Prevention and Response Project

Partner: International Solidarity Foundation (ISF)
Implemented by: AYAN Kenya

AYAN Kenya successfully completed the Kisii GBV Prevention and Response Project, a community-driven initiative designed to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV) in Kisii County. The project brought together young people, women leaders, elders, and other stakeholders to build awareness, challenge harmful norms, and strengthen community-led solutions against GBV.

What We Did:

  • Community Awareness & Advocacy: Organized digital dialogues, community forums, and awareness campaigns to break stigma and open conversations around GBV.
  • Sports for Change: Hosted a community football tournament under the theme “One Team, One Goal: Ending GBV”, using sports as a unifying tool to spread messages of respect, equality, and teamwork.
  • Intergenerational Dialogues: Created safe spaces where elders, youth, survivors, and women leaders openly discussed cultural barriers, shared lived experiences, and built joint commitments to end GBV.
  • Capacity Strengthening: Fostered partnerships with local leaders, youth groups, and stakeholders to support survivor-centered approaches and sustained advocacy.

Our Impact:

  • Reached and engaged 300+ community members across all project activities.
  • Promoted cross-generational dialogue and community ownership in GBV prevention.
  • Strengthened local partnerships to ensure the fight against GBV continues beyond the project.
  • Demonstrated the power of combining sports, culture, and digital platforms for inclusive social change.

Legacy:
The Kisii GBV Prevention and Response Project not only raised awareness but also ignited collective responsibility across generations. It proved that sustainable change against GBV can be achieved when communities come together with courage, innovation, and solidarity. AYAN Kenya is proud to have led this milestone initiative and remains committed to scaling similar efforts across Kenya.
